To begin our year, we will Launch Reading Workshop. Students will create their Reading Workshop binders, begin to reflect on themselves as a reader, set new short and long term goals, and learn strategies for selecting new and challenging books. Students will begin to explore ways to keep track of their thoughts and predictions while reading books.
In our opening Writer's Workshop unit, we will plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish a personal narrative writing piece. We will select stories that matter to us, and narrow down our ideas to focus on one topic. Students will learn several strategies for writing an exciting lead. Writers will learn to "show" their readers a story by using vivid sensory details, strong emotions, dialogue, and adding action to events. They will conclude their narratives with a strong ending.
To open our math unit we will discuss what challenges we face as mathematicians and focus on the idea of having a growth mindset. Students will work together to create class and individual strategies to be successful this year. We'll change the way we think about challenging math problems and focus on turning our mathematical weaknesses into strengths. Our first topic in math will be focused on noticing patterns and place value.
