Choose Love

As Dorchester, we recognize that children’s social-emotional competencies are as important as their academic skills. In order to foster , we use the Choose Love curriculum in grades K-5. The lessons, which the teachers implement in the classrooms, focus on four key units: Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action. Students learn about the neuro-science behind their emotions and develop strategies for self-regulation and handling social situations.

At the end of each unit, the entire school comes together for a celebration assembly, whether in person or virtually. Teachers present a student from each class with an award to showcase that students’ courage, gratitude toward another student, forgiveness, or compassion and all of the students rally around one another to congratulate their classmates and Building Buddies (students from another grade with whom they are partnered throughout the year). The tenants of the Choose Love program are integrated into other aspects of the school experience, such as when students take a Brave Breath before participating in a competition or are guided to use what they have learned to navigate conflicts with peers.
