~ WCMS Summer Reading 2020 ~
We are excited to announce the integration of our summer reading program and our comprehensive, community-based character education program. Our 2020-2021 Character Education Program will launch in the fall during our annual Day One celebration. This program will run throughout the entire school year, giving students the opportunity to be part of a "house" with classmates from various grade levels and providing our students with an opportunity to explore diversity, acceptance, school spirit, and service.
In preparation for our work on Day One, we are asking all students to read at least one story from each of the five themes in the book Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change by Garth Sundem. The themes are:
- Kids Saving the Environment
- Kids Standing Up for Themselves
- Kids Helping Others
- Kids Overcoming Challenges
- Kids Using Talent and Creativity
The students may read this book in text or audio format. We also invite the entire Woodcliff Middle School community to read this fascinating non-fiction book along with our students and teachers as we embark on this exciting journey.
Students are also required to read one additional Fiction or Nonfiction title for their ELA course. Each grade is provided with a comprehensive book list, (found below) encompassing various genres. These lists contain online elements to help students choose the right book for them.
Once your child has read the fiction or non-fiction book they chose, they should complete the note-taking document (in the form of a graphic organizer or short answer responses) associated with their grade. Students will be required to turn in this document to their ELA teachers at the beginning of the school year to be graded.
A copy of each summer reading book has been purchased on Sora, our new digital platform. Please remember, the checkout period is 21days and the book is returned automatically.
*Students are permitted to use audiobooks along with the text, if preferred*
In an effort to help save the environment, we will not be distributing paper packets of the book lists. Click on the links below for the book lists and assignments pertaining to your child’s grade:
