Aquarium Academy–  Mr. Nikolaidis (Grades 6-8)

Do you have a fish tank at home and want to learn more about designing and operating fish tanks?  Join Aquarium Academy!  We will set up, clean, and restock the aquariums that are currently in Woodcliff Middle School.  Additionally, we will research the fish and plant life we currently have and add more wildlife to create a harmonious aquatic ecosystem.  We will also take care of the newest members of the WCMS community: a dwarf hamster and a fat tailed gecko!

The Universe can be a beautiful place. Ever wanted to see the moon of Jupiter or the Orion Nebula through your own eyes? Come and join us as we look into the sky using telescopes, binoculars, and cameras. In the winter it is freezing so dress warm. Hot chocolate will be served on the frozen nights. (Limit – 12 students)

Axis + Allies:  Mr.Falstrom (Grades 6-8)

The exciting and addictive board game returns!  Learn about the geopolitics, geography, and military strategy of World War II by re-imagining many of the key battles.  What if the British had helped the Russians break the siege of Leningrad?  What if the Japanese had attacked Siberia the way Hitler wanted?  You take control of the Soviet, German, British, Japanese or American military machines and fight it out in this dice-based, Risk-like strategy game.  But you’d better be good at math so you can decide whether you really need that extra tank division to take your enemy’s turf, improve your economy and make their resources yours.

What do Barack Obama and Pearl S. Buck have in common? Both are published authors, well known humanitarians, and both have been awarded Nobel Prizes. Through the novels and short stories written by Pearl S. Buck we will meet this amazing woman and come to understand her place in American and Chinese history!

If you are a heritage Chinese or just simply interested in China -the exotic orient country, her language and culture, come to join us in the Chinese Magic Chamber.  This semester we will focus on the Chinese festivals, food, calligraphy, songs, movie and the Kung-fu (the martial art). You will learn the most useful expressions through these activities.

Colonial Fort Construction – Mr. Welsh (Grades 6-8)

This class will construct a scale model of a colonial America fort.  Using tooth picks and other supplies, we will attempt to replicate a colonial fort to the exact detail.  If you like building models, this class is for you.  This month, we will attempt to reconstruct Fort McHenry.  The legendary fort, located in Baltimore, Md., marks the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner.

Drum Lessons: Mr. O'Keefe (Grades 6- 8)

How does the idea of playing drums "strike" you? Drum lessons with Mr. O'Keefe will offer lessons to students who have either had a bit of exposure to drum playing, or have never picked up a pair of sticks but are interested in learning. We will learn both the rudiments of drumming as well as how to apply those rudiments and experiment on the drum set and percussion instruments.

From Couch to the 5K:  Mr. Kaplan (Grades 6-8)

Too many people have been turned off to running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.  You should ease into your running program gradually.  The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months. Meet up for stretching techniques, strengthening techniques, short runs, and outline a gradual growth plan that will have you 5K ready for Thanksgiving.  Reduce stress, lose weight, feel good.

Genocide around the World (Grades 6-8) Room 47 (Seifert)

While catastrophic and inexcusable, the Nazi Holocaust is not the only genocide to ever occur.  There have been multiple genocides in recent world history.  Come learn about genocides that have occurred in Armenia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Cambodia by reading relevant articles, engaging in discussions, and watching related movies.  We’ll also spend time discussing a genocide currently unfolding in Darfur, where over a million men, women, and children have been displaced from their homes for over a decade.

Time for Tennis – Mr. Nikolaidis & Mrs. Benne (Grades 6-8)

Do you know how to play tennis and want to get out and hit around?  Are you interested in learning how to play tennis?  Beginners and professionals are welcome.  As soon as it warms up let’s hit the courts.  We will meet after school at 3:00pm and walk up to the Old Mill.  We will organize mini tournaments for both singles and doubles players.  Please bring your racket and tennis balls.  This 9th period is weather permitting.

Woodwind Ensemble – K. Fleming (Grades 6-8)

The Woodwind Ensemble is made up of Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bass Clarinets, Alto Saxes, Tenor Saxes, and Bari Saxes.  We will explore different styles of music written for this smaller group of instruments.  The music that is performed is on a more advanced level and provides opportunities to strengthen your playing.

Writing Tutor:  Mr. Kaplan (Grades 6-8)

Do you struggle with introductions, motivators, and thesis sentences?  Can you write effective transition sentences?  Have you figured out how to elaborate on a subject? Can you write a memorable conclusion? Maybe you just need help developing thorough responses to written homework questions...

Google Earth: Bobbie Laureni

Your computer becomes a window to anywhere with Google Earth. Tour the world, track weather, measure distances, display historical imagery, or view the solar system. These are just some of the cool things you can do with this program.

This course meets on: Mondays, 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Dorchester Tech Lab, [January and February - Not on Faculty Meeting days]

 

Google Tools – Mrs. Seifert (Teachers) Room 47)

Google offers a wide variety of free tools that are very easy to set up with a little assistance!  Come learn how to integrate these tools into your planning, instruction, and assessment. 

·         Google Custom Search Engine – Set up custom made filters on Google searches to ensure that students are finding reliable websites while doing research. These can be as general or specific as you want for use in general classes or specific projects. 

o   This course meets on: Wednesday, January 27 from 3:00-4:00 pm

·         Google Calendar – plan and announce lessons and assignments from the same calendar.  Learn to use Google’s easy copy event feature to create visually appealing and practical calendars for students.  (See mine as an example on my teacher page)

o   This course meets on: Wednesday, February 3, from 3:00-4:00

·         Google Documents – Learn how to teach students to upload their documents to GoogleDocs so that they may simultaneously edit each others’ work.  This is great for group/paired projects and in my opinion, is much easier to use than Wikis.   This is also a great way for teachers to collaborate on documents without having to open an email, open the attachment, make changes, save to computer, reattach the file, and email back – simplify your life!!

Created for 1st and 2nd year Smartboard users, this overview will show you several strategies that you can use to create more interactive lessons with your SmartBoard. Learn new techniques and create cool, interactive lessons.

Student Assessment Choices – Mrs. Seifert (Teachers) Room 47

Give your students a bit more variety than traditional test formats.  Empower and motivate your students by allowing them to choose their own assessments.  We’ll explore the use of Stations Tests and the Tic-Tac-Toe model to craft assessments.  These are also excellent way to differentiate in order to accommodate various learning styles.
